5 Common Myths About Artificial Grass (That Simply Aren’t True)

From the team at Elite Synthetic Grass – Perth’s locally trusted turf specialists

Thinking about giving your yard a low-maintenance glow-up? Artificial grass might already be sitting in your “maybe” pile — and for good reason. It stays green year-round, it’s easy to look after, and let’s be honest, it just makes life that bit easier.

But if you’ve been digging around online, you’ve probably come across a few comments or opinions that have made you second-guess things. We hear it all the time — and most of the stuff out there just isn’t true.

So, let’s clear the air. Here are five common myths about synthetic turf — and the facts behind them.

Myth #1: It’s Not Safe for Pets

We hear this one a lot — and we totally get it. Pets are family, and no one wants to put them at risk. The truth is, artificial grass is not only safe for pets — it’s often better for them than natural lawn.

The turf we install is designed to handle wear and tear from dogs running around, digging, and even doing their business. The surface is non-toxic, soft under paw, and has excellent drainage — so urine doesn’t sit and create odours. A quick hose down now and then is all it needs. We’ve done countless pet-friendly installs around Perth, and the feedback is always the same: “Wish we did this sooner.”

Myth #2: It’s Too Expensive

Sure, the upfront cost is more than a few rolls of turf from Bunnings — but synthetic grass is one of those investments that pays for itself over time. No watering. No mowing. No fertilising. No more weekends spent pushing a mower under the hot sun.

Once it’s installed, it stays green and neat with barely any upkeep. Plus, a properly installed lawn can last up to 15–20 years. Compare that with the time, effort and money spent on real grass — it’s not hard to see why more Perth homeowners are making the switch.

Myth #3: It Has Poor Drainage

Not true. A big part of what we do is make sure drainage is spot on — especially with Perth’s heavy downpours in winter. The turf we use has a perforated backing that allows water (and pet wee) to drain straight through to the base layer underneath.

No puddles. No mud. No more dirty footprints through the house after the kids or dogs have been outside. You can hose it down easily, and it dries quickly, making it ideal for families and pet owners alike.

Myth #4: It Gets Hot in Summer

This one’s based on older turf from years ago — and while synthetic grass can get warmer than natural grass in full sun, it’s nowhere near as bad as people think.

There are plenty of ways to keep it cooler:

  • Give it a quick hose on hot days (it drops the temp instantly)
  • Add shade where you can (umbrellas, shade sails, even a tree)
  • Use a lighter infill (we can help you choose the right one)

In all honesty, most of our clients say it’s no issue — especially when you factor in the low maintenance and year-round good looks.

Myth #5: It’s Not Safe for Children

We couldn’t disagree more. If anything, artificial turf is perfect for families with young kids. It’s soft underfoot, cushions little falls, and there’s no risk of prickles, burrs, or muddy patches to deal with.

We’ve done heaps of installs for families across Perth — backyards, play areas, even schools — and parents love the peace of mind it gives. It’s cleaner, safer, and gives the kids a great space to play without destroying the lawn every weekend.
